Painting a wood sided house can pose some problems that require special attention. Proper preparation before painting will ensure that your paint will last a long time. Lets begin by troubleshooting some of the problems that can come by not prepping your surface accurately. Once the paint has set in, you may begin to notice that the paint is not sitting well. Most of this is due to typical problems from weathering. The first is fading which happens from too much exposure to light. To be sure that your paint does not fade be sure to use 100% acrylic latex paint which will last longer. If you notice a fine powder on your home it is called chalking which is caused from inadequate priming the paint or not properly painting. Use TSP and water to clean the debris off and rinse well. The next topics covered can all be solved by scraping, sanding and applying primer/high quality paint to your wood to begin with. Blistering bubbles can form and this is from excessive heat or moisture. First see if paint recovers and if it doesn't, scrape away. If it reveals the original primer the damage was caused by heat. If you pop the blisters and it shows the original surface this is caused by moisture in the walls. To rid of the moisture you can install siding vents. To repair scrape away and fill with spackle, sand down and add primer. Other forms of damaged paint are alligatoring, checking, crazing, wrinkling and peeling. Alligatoring is caused when you apply paint over a glossy surface, when the undercoat does not dry properly, you are applying too many coats over time and weather ware. Checking is when there are a few tiny cracks here and there in the surface, while crazing has a lot of cracks in the paints surface. Wrinkling is caused by too much paint being applied at once. Take the time to paint 2 thin even coats. Finally, peeling is caused by applying paint to a soapy surface. To get rid of these types of painting issues, strip, sand, prime and paint. After seeing these problems from not prepping your paints surface properly, prepping and taking your time will be huge factors the next time you paint.
